Last Mindful Lesson
Today was our final mindfulness class with Sol Riou! We reviewed the many ways we use mindfulness in our daily activities, with other people and especially within ourselves. We are saddened to see Sol go, yet remain mindfully aware of all the lessons she has taught us.

Mystery Cemetery
Using a lesson plan from the Archaeological Institute of America the Serpents and Stingrays investigated a "dig site" with 14 graves filled with artifacts. Observing the graves the students looked for common attributes to make inferences about the status, gender and age of each person buried there. An engaging simulation that introduced many concepts related to archaeology that the students will use throughout this years study of ancient cultures.

Brains
Our dear friend, Dr. Khan, came to lecture on the anatomy of the sheep brain! Although the sheep brain is smaller than ours, Dr. Khan identified many of the structures that human brains and sheep brains share. The amygdala is a structure of the brain that controls emotions and our "flight-or-flight" response. We learned about this structure in mindfulness class and how we can use our prefrontal cortex (our decision making portion) to mindfully respond to these signals from our amygdala.
A HUGE THANKS TO DR. KHAN!

Creation Myths
After reading creation myths from many different cultures and comparing them to one another the Serpents wrote their own creation myths. Here are a few examples:
By: Z.M.
For a long time there was nothing but a great need, years and
years of great need. Out of all that swelling great need came five things. In a
way you could say the things were children of the great need.
The first oldest was Earth also known
as World, next came Water or Teary, after that came Air or Oxygen, then came
Fire or Wild, and last came life or Zoe {Zoe in Greek means life}.
Life unlike all the others was a spirit
not an element and was the greatest need. Life asked all the elements for a
little bit of each and from that she made animals.
From Earth she asked for materials and that
her animals could live free on earth’s land. From Fire she asked that all her
animals had warmth. From Air she asked if the oxygen could cycle through its
body. Last from Water she asked if it could cycle through their bodies, and she
added life.
Water got jealous, Life made them alive, the
lived on earth, Fire was always around them. Then he got an idea he flooded
Earth. Earth was so overwhelmed she didn’t know what to do.
Fire went to Water to make a compromise with Water if he only
flooded some parts of the earth Life would give him animals that breathed
water.
Water was satisfied but Air wasn’t
but what did he get in it? So Life made creatures that lived in water and
breathed air. Everyone was satisfied. Earth bore children to Air, Water, and Fire
they were the planets.
They each had many more children like
Light and Dark, Underworld and Heaven. And that’s my creation myth story.

In
the beginning, a long time ago, there were only 2 gods, Aro’hi and Leti’da. The
two of them loved each other very much. Eventually though, after 1,000,000
years of solitude, they had 40 children, ¼ of them female, ¾ of them male. Each
had their own personality except two with the same, one male and one female.
These two were named Carin’olo, (female) and Ewteh’li (male). Their personality
were loving.
Now
these ones married each other, while the rest (9 female 29 male) stayed single.
It was worth it because 5 days 3 hours 8 minutes 9 seconds after their
marriage, they bore 5,005,050,000 children. ½ male ½ female! One the god of the
sky, one the god of the ocean, they kept doing this until all the terrain
features were taken up.
The
rest were made Mortal, doomed to eventually die, while the rest of the gods
were immortal except one, the female gorgon Medusa. She could turn any mortal
to stone with a single glance, with her head cut of her eyes still turned
anyone to stone. Her husband was immortal. The god of the sky, Gotik-kitog-hamiami,
loved her so much, that when she died, he went to the mortal’s house, and drown
him in the ocean, giving his corpse to the ocean god Giliga’gili and left.

Once upon a time, a long time ago there
was a god named Randally. He was the god of nature, Randally had a twin brother
named Paiac and he was the god of destruction.
Their family was all royalty and the
brothers were always fighting over who would be king after their parents had
passed away. Randally was a very kind, young man he would always help around the
village and would refuse to call himself a prince. On the other hand Paiac was
a very mean bully to all of the villagers and would whip all of them. When
Randally found out about what Paiac was doing he tried to put a stop to it.
Unfortunately when Randally told Paiac to stop Paiac got very angry and
threatened to kill Randally if he would ever get in his way of being king and
controlling his life that he would kill the whole family and also him.
A couple years later after he said that
Randally ran away so he wouldn’t harm his family or him. While Randally was
walking to find shelter or food he saw something shining in the dirt and
decided to go see what it was. It was a silver piece of paper, he picked it up
and rubbed it on his cloak to get the dirt off. He noticed that it had a Quote
on it that said “never stop trying” when
he had read that he had gotten some hope that he was going to find somewhere
that he could rest and find some food. So he kept walking and he could see a
big meadow of grass and some bushes of fruit and a tall tree.
He had decided to take a nap and lie there
for a while since he hadn’t slept in ages. While he was asleep he heard
something in the bushes it was a snake that could talk!!! The snake told him
that he looked lonely and asked if he could have a drop of his blood. Randally
said yes and poked him with a dagger that he brought with him. That snake soon
disappeared and came back with a girl named Kia she had then told Randally that
she could do whatever he wished. A couple years later they had a kid and went
back to the village where he had grown up and saw that his brother was now king
and how everyone was being treated very badly so he had come up with a plan. He
went and told all of his villagers that he was back and told them that they
were going to gang up on Paiac and tell him that he would be locked up in jail
for the rest of his life and forced him to back out of the throne. The next
day the plan was in motion all of the
villagers had lined up around the castle and Kia and Randally were up front.
Paiac had noticed and told all of his soldiers to get ready for battle against
their own village the soldiers had disagreed because there family was all the
village. Finally Randally, Kia and the whole village went in the castle and said
what they were going to say. Paiac was surprised to see his brother again and
agreed to go to jail because of what he had done. Kia and Randally were the new
queen and king and the whole village shouted that he was awesome and will never
disobey them ever. They soon had over 100 kids and loved them all. Randally had
invented all of the new tools to farm, cook and build things he then started to
think that if he could do this in his city that he could do it all over the
world so he then speeded the inventions. He had more kids and soon some
grandchildren like sun, moon, death and hope.
And
that is my story of how the world became of how it is.

A long time ago there was a big collision of rock. The
collision caused a mass cloud which created Lotus god of the skies. Lotus felt
lonely in the sky all alone. So he thought to himself : How can I create more?
Lotus thought and thought. In fact, the more he thought the more frustrated he
got.
One day he got so frustrated he started crying. He cried so
hard he created the seas. He realized there was something down below him. He
was so happy he started to laugh. He jumped down and visited the creature.
Her name was Constance
which means peaceful in Latin. Constance also created sea creatures and sea
plants. They soon created people and they were too happy. And one day they
created another god and there were plants and land animals.
Earth formed and more people evolved they enjoyed being on
earth and they were happy that they are a living creature. He was also happy to
have friends. And he wasn’t lonely anymore

I AM
We learned during our Mindfulness class that 90% of our thoughts are negative. To turn that around the Serpents brainstormed positive words that might describe them then made an art work starting with "I am"...
Here are a few of them

Cave Art
After studying the Paleolithic cave art of Lascaux and other sites in France the Serpents went to work making their own versions of the animals depicted in the caves. First they prepared butcher paper with coffee grounds to "age" it then worked with crayons and oil pastels to draw their animals.
