Zimbabwe

The Serpents had a special visitor, the cousin of three Seabury students who is visiting from Zimbabwe. Nadia told the Serpents about her country's political struggles, the amazing sights and the animals like baboons that wander through her yard. It was fascinating and the Serpents learned a lot about a different continent and way of life.

Our Ladybug Friends

The Serpents were asked to help the Ladybugs with their writing. The Serpents helped them spell and write a story then they had a little time to check out the room and relive the days when a classroom had a whole lot of toys! The Serpents and Ladybugs had a great time getting to know one another.

Red Cross Visitor

The Serpents had a visit from the local Red Cross representative Becky Fontaine to present a check for the money they raised at last week's bake sale and cocoa stand. Ms. Fontaine told them about the ways their donation of $752 could help including buying emergency kits for families that include cooking and camping supplies or water containers so families can get fresh water. It will be a long time for the Philippines to rebuild from the typhoon but we're super proud of the Serpents efforts to help!

Bake Sale for the Philippines

The entire Seabury community was incredibly generous in helping the Serpents with their fundraiser for the Philippines! We got so many baked items and everyone brought in change, dollars and even fifty dollar bills! We counted all the donations and came up with around $752 which we will present to the Red Cross at next Friday's Gathering. Thanks so much for your support of this amazing community service project!

Funerary Masks

The Serpents have been working diligently on their replicas of ancient Egyptian funerary masks. They started with just a plain mask and a piece of poster board each. Each Serpent designed and constructed their own mask, then, it was on to two layers of paper mache! After drying, the students continued with painting. Next, we mod podged. Finally, we blinged out our masks!

Pyramids

The Serpents and Stingrays got together and took what they have learned about pyramids to construct models out of sugar cubes. To give them a more "desert" affect we added sand to the outside. It's always fun to join up with the Stingrays for a project!

Tacoma Art Museum-Op Art!

Seabury Serpents and Stingrays enjoyed some wonderful op art at the Tacoma Art Museum on Thursday. Serpents have been learning how to create some of this magic in class and they were  very engaged in discussion of the art we viewed at the museum. We even enjoyed a couple of pieces by artists we studied in class.

Kids and adults created their own op art!

Inclined Planes

As part of their study of ancient civilizations that Serpents are also learning about the invention and use of simple machines. How did the Egyptians raise those huge stones to the top of a pyramid? One answer is the use of inclined planes. The Serpents investigated what angle works the best to make an inclined plane effective.

Technology

Serpents are experienced users of the technological resources here at Seabury School. Many projects are centered around online-based, credible research and require mastering programs such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Technology time is a crucial piece of our regular curriculum.

After finishing their Egyptian research, the Serpents took a few moments to help our younger Seabury students, the Explorers, with one of their tech projects! Serpents love to lend a helping hand in teaching those with less experience!
