School Store

The Narwhals have been super hard at work producing bracelets, key chains and cards to sell at the School Store. What they made were a great hit at the store.

This week the middle schoolers were here so they also got to shop at the store. The Narwhals have learned how to order products for the store, set up spreadsheets and do formulas in Excel, count change, do unit pricing and take inventory. All of the profits from the store will go toward our trip to Washington DC in the spring.

Food Science

The Narwhals have been studying health and nutrition. They then learned how to conduct tests for carbohydrates, lipids, starch, proteins and Vitamin C. They then tested foods first with a grease spot test where they applied different foods to brown paper and saw which left behind a stain when it dried, afterward they graphed the results. Crisco, olive oil and both ranch dressing and tarter sauce were very high in fats.

The next test was for Vitamin C where they tested various drinks to see which contained the most Vitamin C. Orange and apple juice were the clear winners.

Finally they will design their own procedure to test various foods using the methods they have already learned and share the results with the class.
